Book Review - Boho Paisley Colouring Book

by Debra Valencia (Struik Lifestyle) ISBN: 9781432307387

Meeting the high expectations for the sudden craze on adult colouring books, I found that this Boho Paisley Colouring Book was both relaxing and entertaining. I was intrigued to find out that colouring books are able to reduce anxiety, create focus, or bring about more creativity.

In this particular book, you can fill out numerous beautiful patterns in any way you like. I definitely enjoyed the colouring tips on cool and warm colours, as well as primary, secondary and tertiary colours. It is also filled with different colouring ideas and examples.

My favourite part of the book was the inspirational quotes found next to the different patterns. I most liked the quote by Alan Watts: “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

I think that this is a great book to take along when you are travelling, or for a rainy day, or even if you need a few moments to yourself to relax and bring out your creativity.

Book Review - Anna And The Swallow Man

by Gavriel Savit (The Bodley Head) ISBN: 9781782300533

Anna is a young girl living in Poland in 1939. Her father is taken away to a concentration camp without warning. After seven years of extraordinary companionship, Anna is left to fend for herself.

She is rejected by all their old friends and is left cold, hungry and lonely. This is when she meets ‘The Swallow Man’. He shows Anna a new sense of magic. This is the start of an extraordinary journey, where intriguing new characters manage to spark a fire within the pages of this book.

I found this multi-layered story a pleasure to read. Each word seemed like it had been intricately planned and each character managed to embellish the novel further. I found this book deeply affecting, and it was fascinating to read a holocaust story from the point of view of such an unsuspecting young child.

The only critique I have on the book is that I found that the words seemed to go off topic a bit too much, which made me zone out at times.

Book Review - Saint Anything

by Sarah Dessen (Penguin) ISBN: 9780141361734

Sydney’s family is falling apart after her brother goes to jail following his latest ‘accident’. She moves schools and feels like a complete outcast at first, as if nothing has changed. She is constantly ignored in her own home, following the disarray surrounding her brother’s troubles.

The Chatham family, who are full of colour and chaos, then welcome her as one of their own. Sydney attracts Mac Chatham, who is quiet and mysterious and has an incredible heart. Can Sydney lead a normal life? Or do her brother’s mistakes from the past catch up with her eventually?

This was a fun and light read, but it got slow and repetitive near the middle, which made it slightly more difficult to focus. I liked the characters and the way the story unfolded. I would recommend this book to someone who is looking for an enjoyable and an easy story, but it was not something that I could remember after a while.

Book Review - Me And Earl And The Dying Girl

by Jesse Andrews (Allen & Unwin) ISBN: 9781760290443

This novel is anything other than expected. When I first saw it, I thought it would be a sappy and heartfelt romance, where two lovers are torn apart by a fatal illness and are eventually so happy that they had each other in their lives, that it doesn’t even matter anymore. However, this story has a surprising and refreshing twist.

Greg is a normal teen who does what he can to get through high school smoothly. After his mother finds out that one of his childhood friends has leukaemia, Greg is forced to befriend her again. Through this mandatory friendship, Greg not only discovers the person that Rachel now is, but he also discovers things about himself that he never knew.

It is beautifully written and entertaining from start to finish. I loved the character of Earl and think that he is the perfect depiction to make the story even more hilarious and genuine.

Olivia's Enchanted Summer

by Lyn Gardner (Nosy Crow) ISBN: 9780857630483

The author was born in London, and now lives in Richmond Park with her family. She is also a theatre critic for theGuardian. Besides the books about Olivia’s adventures, she has written two other children’s books, Into the Woods andOut of the Woods.

This novel is the fourth book in the series about Olivia, a gymnast, and the adventures she shares and memories she makes whilst working in the circus. Olivia and her friends are performing at the Edinburgh Festival.

But things don’t go as well as Olivia had imagined; the circus performers end up having to sleep in their bus, and there is a thief who wants to ruin Olivia’s life! At the end of the festival, due to horrible weather, Olivia wonders if her sad summer can still turn into an enchanted one.

I found that this book a fantastic light read; the characters and settings were written with much care and attention to detail. The book explained to me how true friends will never leave you behind, and how you can make your summer an enchanted one, just by doing the things you love with the ones you love.
